Scrooge’s Christmas Carol Announced for December ’13 https://backstageplayerscompany.bulldogstudios.com/scrooges-christmas-carol-announced-for-december-13/ Sat, 14 Sep 2013 00:38:17 +0000 http://www.backstageplayerscompany.org/?p=4990 Getting “back to its roots,” Backstage Players Company announces its first children’s show since 2009, Scrooge’s Christmas Carol. The work will be a musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. The show will premiere Friday, December 20 at 7:00Two shows (2:00 and 7:00) are scheduled for Saturday, December 21 and the final show will be a Sunday, December 22 matinee at 2:00. All performances will be at Andrews Memorial Theater at Clinton Town Hall, 54 East Main Street.

Auditions for all parts will be Friday, September 20 between 5:00 – 8:00 at Brown School, Madison and Saturday, September 21 between 1:00 – 4:00 at the Guilford Community Center. Prospective cast members should be between seven and 16 years of age. Many speaking and singing roles will be available. No appointments are necessary.

“Since we have expanded our horizons to produce main-stream Broadway plays, we have inadvertantly lost our connection to many of the young children that helped build our theater,” said Ed Hobson, President of Backstage Players. “It is our intention to, once again, do a children’s play. Also, it has always been our dream to produce a Christmas play. Scrooge’s Christmas Carol gives us the opportunity to do both.”

Dates for the production are Friday, May 31 (7:00), Saturday, June 1 (2:00 & 7:00) and Sunday, June 2 (2:00) at Andrews Memorial Theater at Clinton Town Hall. The first rehearsal is scheduled for Monday, March 25 at Brown School, Madison. We must hear from you via email (hobson01@comcast.net) by Saturday, March 23 with a confirmation that you will be accepting your role in Fame, The Musical.

(Throughout the rehearsal process, the director reserves the right to change any of the roles at her discretion.)

*Double-cast roles are listed below. Those female student roles not double cast may be double cast at a later date, with actors from the ensemble at the discretion of the director. Those actors double cast will appear in the ensemble when not in their primary roles.

Open auditions are scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 from 3:00 – 5:30 and Saturday, March 9 from 11:00 – 2:30 at Andrews Memorial Theater at Clinton Town HallRehearsals will begin on Monday, March 24.  Those who audition should be prepared to read from the script, sing a musical selection of your choosing and learn and perform some dance steps, if the part requires. Fame, The Musical is basically an ensemble piece, featuring five teenage male, five teenage female and two adult male and two adult female roles.  The teenage roles are high school students at the New York School for the Performing Arts.  The adult roles are teachers.  All high school students and both female teachers have vocals.  Male teachers do not.

We will be casting many ensemble roles, along with the 14 speaking roles.  All of the ensemble roles are meaningful and feature many song and dance numbers.

The students, speaking roles and ensemble, are either acting, dance or music students.  All students will be asked to dance.  Some of the parts were pre-cast last spring and are designated below.  All female student parts have been double-cast:

Schlomo Metzenbaum – A virtuoso on the violin, who prefers rock music: Role available.

The event will be held on Tuesday evening, February 5, 2013 in the Whitfield Room at the Guilford Community Center. There is a 7:00 curtain. Admission is by donation. Refreshments and roses will be sold. There will be a 50/50 raffle, as well. All proceeds will help fund both productions.

Many actors will be playing multiple roles.

*The “Annie Understudy” will portray an orphan.  She will observe or participate in all “Annie” Rehearsals.  She will play the role if Annie is unable to perform.  Additionally, she will play the role during the Saturday, March 16 matinee.

Orphans with names have speaking parts.  Other orphans do not.  All orphans, however, participate in multiple musical production numbers.

House servants with names have speaking parts.  Others do not.  All house servants, however, participate in multiple musical production numbers.

“Hooverville” is a depression-era shanty town under the 59th Street Bridge in New York City and is the focus of a musical production number.  NYC Citizens will be on the street in New York and also be the focus of another musical production number.  Actors may be added to “Hooverville” or NYC, as the director sees fit.
